My guess is that it is a dedicated inlet for the air conditioner.
If all else fails ring BT when they are back at work - quote your VIN number and they will be able to tell you exactly what it is for ...

Muk mats are fantastic. We have one that fits perfectly in the doorway and it does a great job. The dog reckons it's perfect for him to lay on as well.

Good idea KeznGaz. Presumably the padlock is big enough so that it can't be pulled back up through the opening. Using just one chain and locking it back onto itself would do the job as well.
